With a population of 7,764, as counted by the U.S. Census taken in 2020, Hartsville is the largest town in Darlington County, SC. In the Pee Dee region, Hartsville is a college town with an ethnically diverse population. Downtown Hartsville features a visitor’s center called “They Key.” In addition, Hartsville caters to students by offering many amenities geared toward young people. The town is accessible from I-95 and I-20 and is two hours away from Charlotte, Columbia, and Myrtle Beach.

Most of the public schools in Hartsville are managed by the Darlington School District, including the Hartsville High School, Hartsville Middle School, several elementary schools, and the Southside Early Childhood Center.
