Life in Augusta is anything but boring with its rich heritage and diverse neighborhoods blending southern traditions with today's modern vibes. Fairweather throughout the year attract families to Augusta's community events, hometown adventures, and seasonal festivals. With all the waterways, and natural woodlands families spend a good amount of time together at one of the parks, camping, fishing, hiking, photography, or boating. Whether it's walking tree-lined streets, backyard BBQ's, cruising the waterways, listening to music, or just relaxing under a star-filled sky in the park, family activities in Augusta are just plain old fashion fun.

Neighborhoods fuel the spirit and rhythm of Augusta -- it's about taking pleasure in life, getting together, making new memories, and being happy.

Community Events in Augusta

The business community celebrates with the neighborhood as residents head downtown to socialize at the local eateries, check out the shops and the latest trends in cultural arts.

Some of the best Saturday mornings are spent at the Augusta Market at the River. Here's a chance to sample and browse produce and baked good from different areas of Augusta. Stroll through the shops and booths for something special or order-up food from one of the local food trucks. Choose between downhome cooking, snacks and local cuisine infusions using the best of the season's produce. Savor the day down by the Riverwalk stage with live music and performances unique to Augusta.

Across the Savannah River in North Augusta, South Carolina is the Living History Park. Throughout the year the park presents special seasonal events about colonial times, trading, wildlife, and Christmas in the backcountry. Families get to watch re-enactments of living in the 18th Century. It's a hands-on opportunity for kids to learn about life in a colonial settlement compared to today's modern conveniences. The 7.5 acre park is a reminder of area's past challenges and early developments that became part of its history.

Families Activities Around Augusta

Summertime in Augusta only gets better as landscapes and wildlife come alive with color and the sounds of pure nature at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. Puddle Ducks is one of Augusta's kid events on the second Tuesday of the month. Kids get a chance to wander through the woodlands and waterscapes occupied by turtles, fish, marsh rabbits, and birds. There's even a swamp explorer summer camp for kids to spend time discovering nature with guided hikes through local marshes and swamps.

Who doesn't love being outdoors in the middle of nature? Three miles from Augusta is Pendleton King Park. Wander through 64-acres comprised of a bird sanctuary, pine forests, sand ridges, and marshes. Families love the nature trails in the lower selection of the park; it's where beavers, turtles, fish, frogs, skunks, and lizards make themselves to home.

Back to the city where the heart of Augusta is alive and well in Augusta Common. There's an acre of pristine landscaping, park benches and more. The last Friday from May through August, families can enjoy movies on the lawn at dusk. Spend a summer evening listening to one of the many concerts or scheduled community festivals. Arrive early, bring a chair, and relax, or spread out on a blanket for a family picnic. Top it all off with favorite snacks and local foods from vendors and food trucks.

Fall Events and Winter Pageantry

The upcoming Ironman event is scheduled for then end of September. Spectators can pick a spot along the course and cheer the athletes on as they endure some of the toughest terrain the region.

This year 40 qualified athletes will compete in a triathlon course composed of 1.2-miles swimming down the Savannah River starting at 6th street and exiting the water at the Augusta Rowing Complex, public boat ramp. The first transition, athletes will run a grassy plot to begin a 56-mile loop from downtown Augusta to the back countryside comprised of hills, graded inclines and challenging downhill routes, complete with hairpin turns. Athletes return to the Augusta Rowing complex for the next transition and a 13.1-mile flat course run through downtown Augusta to the finish line on Broad Street.

Winter and the holidays in Augusta are about decorations, lights, lights, and more lights. Who doesn't love the season's time-honored festive celebrations and activities from spectacular ice shows to heartfelt theatrical childhood stories? It gets better. During the month of December, Hope Gardens present 2-miles of lighted pathways and holiday displays featuring over 100,000 twinkling lights. The local schools, church choirs, volunteers and community groups come together to share the holiday spirit of Augusta. Families bring blankets and chairs for lawn seating, and thermoses filled with hot chocolate to celebrate the festivities.

The final destination of course is Rye Patch, where kids line up to visit with Santa and share secret wishes and dreams of presents to open on Christmas day. Add another memory and take a photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus while you're there.
