About Plainview, TX

Plainview is the county seat of Hale County. It is about 40 miles due north of Lubbock on I-27. It is located on a plateau called the Llano Estacado. The 2020 census counted 20,187 people living in this town.

In 1887, Plainview was founded. It was named Plainview because it sat on a large, flat, treeless plain. You can see many miles of the surrounding desert. The town got its charter in 1888, and then in 1906, when the railroad arrived, it started to expand. In 1907, the city was incorporated.

In contemporary times, the city is known for its meat processing plants. The Cargill beef processing plants closed in 2013 due to the drought that killed all the farm animals from 2010 to 2012. Cargill was the largest employer at that time and laid off 2,500 workers who had to relocate to find work.

The actor and country-western singer Jimmy Ray Dean is a notable person from Plainview. He advertised the products he created for his brand name, Jimmy Dean Sausage, on television. After he died in 2010, the products remained popular and are still being sold using his likeness.
