About Greenville, SC
The county seat of Greenville County is the lovely city of Greenville. This city is named well because it is surrounded by lush forests filled with evergreen trees.
According to the 2020 census, the population is 70,720. The census taken in 2010 counted 58,409 people living in the town. This means that in the decade from 2010 to 2020, the town had a dynamic population growth of 21.1%. In 2015 and 2016, this town grew at the fourth-fastest rate compared to all cities in America.
The town is part of a larger area in the state called The Upstate. There are 1,487,610 people (2020 census) living in the Upstate.
Historically, this land was the hunting ground for the Cherokee people. In 1754, a settler named Richard Pearis moved here from Virginia and established friendly relations with the Cherokee Nation. He married a Cherokee woman and learned their language.
For this cooperation and friendship, he was rewarded with 100,000 acres of Cherokee land in 1770 to start a plantation. The plantation was established on the Reedy River in an area that is now downtown Greenville.
After his tremendous relationship with the native people and his good luck, things changed. Pearis lost his land due to the American Revolution because he was on the side of the British Loyalists. His plantation was set afire, and he went to prison, never to return to the area.
Despite the downfall of Pearis, after the independence of the United States was established, the area started to thrive once again with new owners and new plantations.
