It was founded in 1890 and named after the daughter of General W. W. Harllee. He was the president of the W & M Railroad during the time when the city was incorporated.

About 38,000 people live in the city. Florence is considered to be one of the largest cities in South Carolina. It is known for its agricultural products, textile mills, pharmaceutical companies, paper processing plants, and other manufacturers.

What To Do in Florence

Antique lovers will enjoy hunting for treasures at the Palmetto Peddlers Antiques Mall. It has many vendors and gets rave reviews from visitors for having something for everyone. If you cannot find what you are looking for there, then continue your treasure hunt at the Thieves Market.

History buffs will appreciate a visit to the Florence Veterans Park to see the memorials. It is located just behind the Civic Center. There is also the Florence National Cemetery with graves dating back to the American Civil War. Another must-see for history lovers is the Florence County Museum. It has over 140 pieces of artwork including work created by William H. Johnson who is from Florence.

Florence is in the Florence County School District One. There are 18 public schools with a total enrollment of around 14,500 students. There are 12 elementary schools, three middle schools, and three high schools.

There are six private schools, which are All Saints' Episcopal Day School, Florence Christian School, The King's Academy, Montessori School of Florence, Saint Anthony Catholic School, and Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate School.

Colleges and Universities: Francis Marion University is a public liberal arts school in Florence. Florence-Darlington Technical College is located in Florence as well.

Florence Municipal Government and Parks

The Freedom Florence Recreation Complex has a huge gymnastics center, nine softball fields, three football fields, an amphitheater, picnic areas, and walking/jogging trails that go through the park and around a five-acre lake.

There is a playground for kids, an amphitheater for events, and two beautiful gardens.

Other Florence parks to enjoy include Iola Jones, Jeffries Creek, Lester, Levy, Lucas, Maple, McLeod, Northside, Northwest, and Southpark. Legion Stadium is a nice baseball park that seats 2,500 and is lighted for night games. The Barnes Street Activity Center has gym equipment that can be used by adults and teen. There is an activity space, a study room, and a computer room.
