About Jacksonville, NC

Jacksonville is the county seat of Onslow County. The 2020 census counted 72,723 people living in the city. It is the largest city in the county. The area has many young people due to the military base for marines at Camp Lejeune.

**

As far as city history goes, settlers moved into the area after the Tuscarora War forced the Native Americans from their tribal lands. Soon after the area was settled, the Wantland’s Ferry took people and goods across the New River at the site that is today’s downtown Jacksonville waterfront.

The city was incorporated in 1842 and named after President Andrew Jackson. The local economy was built up by supplying turpentine, tobacco, and lumber.

In 1941, the U.S. Congress authorized the purchase of 100,000 acres along the shore of the New River to build a military base, which eventually became Camp Lejeune. The landowners were paid, but the sharecroppers who built houses on rented land were not compensated for their loss.

In contemporary times, the city is best known for being the first location to recognize a paid holiday in 2016 for a celebration of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution that made slavery illegal.
