Montana is nicknamed "Big Sky Country" because of the breathtaking vistas and wide-open spaces. Hamilton is in the state's center, surrounded by mountains that create majestic views. It is about 45 minutes from Highway 93, south of the large city of Missoula.

This little town had only 4,659 people for the 2020 count of the U.S. Census. It is the county seat of Ravalli County. The Ravalli County Public Airport is just one mile east of the town. Nothing changes quickly in this little town. It was the last city in Montana to have a Kmart. The store finally closed in 2022, outdone by its competitor Walmart.

The federal government operates the Rocky Mountain Laboratories, which conducts microbiological research. The facility has 30 buildings on 36 acres. It offers high-paying jobs for the scientific staff, employing around 450 people, making it the largest employer in the area.

The winters are cold, with temperatures below freezing in January. Springtime and summer are pleasantly warm yet not too hot. The average temperature in summer, during the hottest month of July, is only 69 °F.

The city is best known for being near the Bitterroot Mountains, which offer excellent hiking opportunities, and the Sapphire Mountains, which hunters appreciate. Wearing a cowboy hat and cowboy boots, then hunting or fishing, is a regular pastime for those who enjoy a Western country lifestyle.
