About Waseca, MN
Waseca is the county seat of Waseca County. It is located at Federal Highway 14 and State Highway 13 crossroads. The population is 8,892 (2020 U.S. Census).
Historically, the town was platted in 1867 when a post office opened. It became officially incorporated in 1881. The name Waseca is from the Native American Dakotan language. It means “rich in provisions.”
The Waseca County Historical Society has a nice museum with interesting exhibits about the local area. Six buildings in this quaint, small American town are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. They are the Philo C. Bailey House (built in 1868), the William R. Wolf House (circa 1895), the Roscoe P. Ward House (built in 1896), the John W. Aughenbaugh House (built in 1897), the Waseca County Courthouse (built in 1897), and the W. J. Armstrong Company Wholesale Grocers Building (circa-1900).
This town is known for Clear Lake and Clear Lake Park. This lake and park are a significant portion of the town’s area on the northeast side. There are about 1.19 square miles of water. The land is about 4 square miles. Together, this makes 5.19 square miles for the village and lake.
