About Maple Lake, MN

The American painter Norman Rockwell would have loved this charming little village called Maple Lake. It is situated next to a 777-acre lake of the same name. The population count in the 2020 census was only 2,162 people. Rockwell became famous for painting his viewpoint of the quintessential American lifestyle in a small town. Maple Lake would be the perfect subject for his style.

Maple Lake is in Wright County. It is surrounded by farmland. This area was the home of the native people called the Ojibwa, which the settlers called the Chippewa. In 1855, the U.S. Government broke its treaty with the Ojibwa tribe and encouraged settlement of the area. The founding of the village occurred in 1858.

Many settlers came from Europe. The village expanded slowly until 1887 when a man named Madigan started selling lots. After the railroad arrived in 1888, the expansion continued to include more farming. The first grain elevator went into operation in 1889.

Fishing is a favored activity in this area. The lakes have bass, pike, bluegill, and walleye fish.
