About Annandale, MN

Annandale is an hour’s drive from Minneapolis in a beautiful part of Minnesota called ’The Heart of the Lakes’. Within ten miles of the town, there are 26 lakes. This small town has only 3,420 people, as counted by the 2020 census. The locals are friendly and welcoming if you move to this town.

The settlement of this area began modestly with a post office in 1887. Then, it was incorporated as a town in 1888. The Scottish city of Annan is the source of inspiration for the town’s name. Like many parts of Minnesota, the settlers came from Europe. Many came to America from Ireland and Scotland. Much of this European departure was due to the potato famine. The decade-long famine began in Ireland in 1845 and spread to Scotland in 1846. The immigrants first landed in New York and then spread across the country to parts of Minnesota as the settlers moved west.

The Thayer Hotel is the oldest, still-operating structure in town. It is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. It opened in 1895 and remained a bed and breakfast until 2010. It closed from 2011 to 2016 when the owners retired. It was bought and reopened in 2018. It is currently a restaurant and hotel once again.
