About Geismar, LA

Geismar is about 21 miles south of Baton Rouge via Highway 30. It is an unincorporated area just east of the Mississippi River, which is part of Ascension Parish and the larger Baton Rouge Metropolitan Area. The area is part of what is called the Chemical Corridor by some and Cancer Alley by detractors. It has this name for the more than 200 petrochemical plants and refineries that line an 85-mile-long stretch running parallel to the Mississippi River.

In contemporary times, the city is known for the explosion of a chemical plant in 2013, which injured over 70 people and killed two.

There is not much to do in Geismar except play golf or soccer and hang out at the truck stop casino in nearby St. Gabriel.
