Mount Sterling got part of its name from Little Mountain, an ancient burial mound in the state, and Stirling, a town in Scotland. Fun fact: the misspelling of the name to Mount Sterling stuck, and it's been this way ever since.

Mount Sterling may be small in stature, but it certainly isn't short on things to do and a rich quality of life. The town is a four-time winner of the "100 Best Communities for Young People" award. Quaint bed and breakfasts, theaters, art centers, and local restaurants are worthwhile stops for anyone wishing to spend the day or weekend in town. The Jefferson Davis Monument is an intriguing historical site in homage to the birthplace of the only Confederate President during the Civil War. Its tower provides a great view of Mount Sterling's serene local farms and rolling foothills. Court Day, a historical time of trading in Mount Sterling's history, is today an event of festivities, food, and shopping wares from local vendors. Beautiful state parks surround the town, too, and are wonderful places to take walks, go fishing, or enjoy the fresh air. Notable areas include Cave Run Lake, Easy Walker Park, and Mount Sterling Montgomery County Recreation Park.

Mount Sterling School District

All primary schools in Mount Sterling and its immediate area are run by the Montgomery County Board of Education. The primary schools for Mount Sterling are Mapleton Elementary School and Montgomery County High School. These excellent schools have a great support system to ensure the success of their students. The Freshman Experience partners each new first-year high school student with a mentor who counsels them if they need help with grades or adjusting to the school. The mentorship continues after the first year with a Student Advisor, usually a school staff member, through graduation. Other opportunities, such as community volunteer programs, the Work Ethics program, and business prep with organizations like Future Business Leaders of America, provide a wealth of resources for young students to prepare for college and future careers.

If a student fails in educational progress, Sterling School can help them get back on track. The school is closely partnered with Morehead State University and offers dual credit programs to help students get back on their feet and prepare for college. Other notable colleges nearby Mount Sterling are in Lexington. They include Bluegrass Community and Technical College, Eastern Kentucky University, and the University of Kentucky.
