About Newburgh, IN

Newburgh is a borough in Ohio Township. It is in Warrick County along the banks of the Ohio River. The population is 3,344 as counted by the 2020 U.S. Census. There has been little change in the population over the past ten years.

European explorers first came to the area in the 17th century. The native people lived here for at least 10,000 years before the explorers came. In 1803, the founders of Newburgh, John Sprinkle and Abner Luce, arrived. They secured land grants in 1812 and 1818. The town was officially created as the first town in Warrick County in 1829.

The location on the river allowed the town to grow dynamically. By 1850, it was one of the largest river ports on the Ohio-Mississippi River. During the American Civil War, it was captured by Confederate forces in a battle called the Newburgh Raid. Each year, there is a reenactment of this battle in memory of those who died in the war.

In contemporary times, the town is known for being a tourist destination for its historic downtown district with shops and restaurants along the riverfront.
