Anderson is the county seat in Madison County, Indiana. Anderson is located in the state's center in a lovely rural area. The small city is surrounded by farmland. It has a population of around 97,000. I-69 runs through the southeast corner of the town. Anderson is 43 miles northeast of downtown Indianapolis.

The city of Anderson was named after a Native American, Chief William Anderson. It was incorporated as a town in 1838, with 350 people living there. The downtown historic district has 32 preserved buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Buildings. Some buildings date back to 1887.

What To Do in Anderson

The Anderson Speedway is the home of the Pay Less Little 500 and the Redbud 400 auto races. The Hoosier Park is a horseracing track and casino. The Paramount Theater first opened in 1929 in Anderson. Over the many years of operations, it has been lovingly maintained. It was fully restored in 1995. It has a ceiling painted to give the illusion of looking up at the star-filled night sky. This "atmospheric theater" is one of only 12 in the United States.

Music: Many nationally touring acts perform at the Paramount Theater. During summer (July to August), there are free concerts to enjoy in the downtown area at the Dickmann Town Center on Friday nights. There are live outdoor concerts at the Athletic Park. At the end of July, there is the George W. Hiles Music Fest to enjoy.

Nature: A wonderful place to take a hike is the Mounds State Park on the White River. Another excellent place for a picnic is the Rangeline Nature Preserve. Kids will like the White River Ziplines and Paint Ball Adventure.

Museums: The Museum of Madison County History is in Anderson. Art galleries and live music are available at the York Performance Hall. The Scheierman Gallery has the Warner Sallman collection. Sallman was a Christian artist famous for his paintings of Jesus Christ. Another art gallery is the Anderson Museum of Art. It is small, with three rooms of exhibits, but also offers art classes.

The biggest employers in Anderson are the Community Hospital, St. Vincent Health, Nestle, Hoosier Park, Carter Express, and Anderson University. General Motors used to have a factory in Anderson, but it closed.

The city also rents out a mobile stage mounted on a trailer bed. It can be towed to a location for an outdoor event.

In addition to managing all the facilities, the Parks and Recreation Department offers youth activities, including youth camps in summer, senior activities at the community center, and adult intramural sports programs. There are flower planting events in the Shadyside Memorial Park and free fishing days at the lake for families to enjoy together.

Community members are encouraged to remember a loved one who passed by planting a memorial red cherry tree or installing a dedicated memorial bench on one of the lovely walking trails in the park.
