Albany is in southwest Georgia, near the Florida border, about 88 miles north of Tallahassee. The population is around 77,000. The Albany settlement started in 1836. Nelson Tift took over the land near the Hudson River. The land was stolen from the Native Americans who lived there in a process called 'Indian removal.' Albany was incorporated as a city in 1838.
