About Malabar, Florida

Malabar is located south of Palm Bay and north of Grant- Valkaria on the India River, which runs along the Atlantic seaboard. Like the rest of Florida, it has sunny weather most of the year. Malabar is a Spanish term. Mala means bad, and the bar portion refers to the sand bars in the shallow waters that would strand any ship foolish enough to try to sail up the Indian River.

There is some risk of problems with hurricanes if you live near the coast; however, the Indian River serves as a buffer between the Atlantic Ocean and this part of Florida. The river is about a mile wide near Malabar. It forms a big lagoon between a thin strip of land on the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the rest of this part of Florida's coastline essentially. If you find a place inland, you will be safer from hurricane risk, and the prices of the homes and the rent go way down.

To the north of Malabar and Palm Bay is Melbourne, Florida, a nice city. There are only about 3,000 people in Malabar. Much of the land surrounding this community is used for agriculture. You can see many fruit orchards. Vegetables, such as okra, grow very well in this climate too. This is why the Glatter family started the town in 1918 with a 40-acre vegetable farm that still operates. For those wanting to homestead with a small family farm, this is the perfect area to consider.

What To Do in Malabar, FL

Boating and fishing on the Indian River are very popular as water sports like parasailing and waterskiing. Malabar is a trail town because of the many green areas reserved for public use, with hiking, jogging, and mountain biking trails. These include the Malabar Community Park, Malabar Scrub Sanctuary, A Tuttle Paved Trail, and the Sand Hill Trail Head.

The Turkey Creek Sanctuary will go north into Palm Bay. It has trails and nearly two miles of wooden boardwalk paths built above the water. This is an interesting hike. There is a lovely nature center with exhibits to learn about the local flora and fauna.

Bird watchers enjoy this sanctuary, part of the Great Florida Birding Trail. You can also see turtles, manatees, and the world-famous Florida alligators from the safety of a raised wooden platform that keeps them at a distance.
