What You Should Know About Estero, FL

Estero is a village of around 32,000 people in the more prominent Cape Coral/Ft. Myers Metro area. It is in Lee County on the west coast of southern Florida, facing toward the Gulf of Mexico. The beautiful Estero Bay is between the village of Estero and Estero Island. Estero Island is part of a long, thin peninsula that stretches from Fort Meyers Beach at its north end to Lovers Key State Park in the south.

Estero has a crazy history. It was founded by a religious cult leader, Cyrus Teed, in 1894 on 320 acres. It became the village of Estero on September 1, 1904. Teed believed that we all live on the inner portion of the earth's outer skin and that the stars in the heavens are all part of the hollow earth.

Teed attracted about 250 families to live with him and a few thousand other followers. He claimed to be immortal. When he died in 1908, the cult fell apart. The original buildings of the religious group and the founder's house were preserved as historical heritage properties.

In 1961, the land and buildings were donated to the state. It became the Koreshan State Historic Site, which visitors can see today. It has exotic plants, trees, birds, and wild animals. The cult members are all long gone. What remains now is a very desirable area to live in Florida.

What To Do in Estero

The Koreshan State Historic Site has a nice campground. It offers pleasant picnic areas, boating, and fishing on the lake. There are excellent hiking trails. Canoes can be rented for use on the lake. It is near the beach and the Estero River. Kayaks are available At the river to rent for river rafting.

Sports fans who like ice hockey will love the Hertz Arena. It is the home ice arena for the Florida Everblades ECHL. It also frequently has Disney on Ice shows and other concerts.

There is plenty to do at the beach, such as jogging, roller-blading, sunbathing, beach parties, and swimming. Or you can enjoy Estero Bay and the ocean with boating, fishing, kitesurfing, parasailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, wakeboarding, and windsurfing.

Mound Key Archeological State Park is a little island in Estero Bay. It is near Fort Meyers. It would help if you took a small boat to get to the island for a day's adventure looking for treasure.

Nature lovers will appreciate the Happehatchee Center. It is a Native American nature center that offers healing circles, yoga, and peaceful walks through old pine trees, giant oaks, and palms.

The Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve has 10,000 acres of islands, inlets, and waterways ready to explore. It is just west of Estero and part of Estero Bay. The Estero Bay Preserve State Park is the wetland portion to the north that teems with wildlife.

The best stores are found to the east at the Miromar Outlets. This mall provides excellent shopping, with over 140 stores to choose from.

Working in Estero

The median household income in Estero is around $72,000 (for 2018). This is more than the average in the United States of $58,000. Employers offering jobs in Estero have management, sales, service industries, health care, science, technology, and office administration positions.

  • Town Center: Buying a home in this neighborhood will cost about $325,000.
  • Corkscrew Road/South Tamiami Trail: This more economical yet decent area has homes listed for around $235,000.

Estero School District

The school district for Estero is the Lee County School District.

There are three public schools in Estero: one grammar school, one middle school, and one high school. There are 15 more public schools nearby. There are no private schools in this village.

Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) is just northeast of Estero in Fort Meyers. It is easily accessible by taking about a ten-minute drive. Students who like to live off-campus find downtown Estero vibrant and convenient. It is an easy commute to school. One of the things FGCU is known for is its excellent Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.
