What You Should Know About Waterbury

The nickname for the city of Waterbury is Brass City because, during the first half of the 20th Century, it became the leading producer of brassware in the United States and still has a metal industry sector. It has a population of 110,366 (2010 Census). It is in a verdant part of Connecticut, surrounded by lush forests. It is about equal distance between Hartford and Danbury. It is 30 miles from Hartford to the northeast and 28 miles to Danbury going toward the southeast on I-84.

The area was originally home to Native American tribes called the Algonquin bands. They called the territory Matetacoke, which means interval land due to competing claims on the land by different tribes. The Puritan settlers of nearby Farmington bought the land from the other tribes without paying attention to the actual ownership. It took a long time for the town to grow. It stayed at less than 5,000 people for over 100 years. It was the industrial revolution, along with the brassware manufacturing plants, that brought people to the area.
