About Dothan, AL
According to the 2020 census, 71,072 people live in Dothan. The city is part of the greater Dothan Metropolitan Area, which has about 150,000 people.
Before this area was part of Alabama, it was a British Colony called West Florida in the late 1700s. In the 1830s, a few families came here to cut timber and established the settlement called Poplar Head near a small spring. The settlement failed and was abandoned during the American Civil War.
With a new name, the city of Dothan was incorporated in 1885. It started to build up as part of the reconstruction after the Civil War.
In the 1910s, a plague of boll weevil insects decimated the cotton crop. Local farmers switched to peanuts. They continue to be grown today, providing 25% of the annual harvest in the USA. The concentration on peanut farming is what gives the town the nickname of the “Peanut Capital of the World.” In recent years, the Peanuts Around Town project resulted in more than 40, five-foot peanut sculptures installed around the town.
