The Onslow County seat of government is the City of Jacksonville. The U.S. Census in 2010 counted 70,145 living in the city, and the more recent 2020 census counted 72,723. The population grew by 3.7% over the decade from 2010 to 2020.

The settlers also created huge tobacco plantations operated with the use of enslaved labor.
In 1842, the city was incorporated. It was named after Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States. The population grew rapidly because of the expansive natural resources.
In contemporary times, the city is best known for the Camp Lejeune military base for marines. It was founded in 1941 with the U.S. government's purchase of 100,000 acres along the New River. Now, it is the largest marine base on the East Coast.
