Back To Index

Miami, Florida is the sixth most densely populated city in the United States with a population of over 467,000 people. The city takes up around 56 square miles and is a major place of employment and entertainment for the surrounding cities and suburbs. It's the second-largest city in Florida and it is one of the most significant metropolitan areas in the country.

Miami is also the flagship city of the Miami metropolitan area, which has a population of 6.1 million people. Residents and locals from surrounding cities enjoy Miami's exciting urban landscape and beautiful beaches. Many people from across the country and around the world call this place home because it offers significant employment opportunities. Here are the things you need to know before moving to this big city.

1. Arts Thrive in Miami

If you want to be near current trends in the arts, then Miami is the place for your interests to flourish. There is a diverse population of Miami that influences its arts and music scene, and artists from many places in the world have made their mark here.

Miami is home to annual festivals like the Calle Ocho Festival which celebrates entertainment arts in theater and the Performing Arts. You can also find opera performances, ballet shows, concerts, and musicals from around the world.

Miami is home to many performing arts venues such as the Olympia Theater, Fair Expo Center, Tower Theater, and Bayfront Park Amphitheatre. The Miami International Film Festival is also held here for every March which gives the spotlight to independent films from around the world. Individuals who have an interest in modeling can also have a better chance of finding work here as Miami is home to top modeling agencies.

2. Amazing Food From Around the World

Miami is often called the "Latin Capital of America" and its cuisine is also heavily influenced by its many Latin American residents. If you are a particular fan of Latin American cuisine, then you are going to love all the choices you have in restaurants in Miami.

For example, you can find authentic Cuban food from restaurants established by Cuban immigrants. There are also taquerias, Cajun food, Turkish food, and fusion restaurants such as the Japanese-Peruvian hit Itamae. Miami also has delicious Seafood because it's located near Biscayne Bay. This proximity gives restaurants access to fresh fish daily!

3. A Sports Fans Paradise

If you're a big sports fan, then you will be delighted with Miami's many sports teams. Miami is home to professional football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and hockey teams. You'll find opportunities to watch the Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat, Miami Marlins, and many other teams playing live in the stadium.

There are also greyhound racing tracks and car races for fans of races. The most famous among the races is the Grand Prix of Miami which is one of the biggest events in NASCAR. You will also find plenty to keep you occupied in college sports with plenty of football and basketball games to attend during their seasons.

4. Spanish Is Another Official Language

Before you move to Miami, it might be wise for you to brush up on your Spanish or learn a few key phrases. Miami is a very diverse community with a lot of Latin American immigrants and descendants living within the city. It has cultivated its dialect, so many people prefer to speak in Spanish within the city.

Knowing Spanish will help you get around Miami -- especially when you go into areas of the city where Spanish is more widely used. It's a truly remarkable place to live where you can hear both English and Spanish being spoken in the streets.

5. Residents Can Reach the Local Government

The city of Miami is quite large, so it uses a mayor-commissioner type of local government. Five representatives in the city Commission are elected from different districts. This body of government can pass ordinances and enforce regulations to improve the city as needed.

There's also a mayor who's elected at-large. Residents who would like to be involved in the local government can contact their representatives through the Miami City Government's website.

6. It's Where the Jobs Are

Miami draws a lot of young professionals because it's a major center of commerce -- not only in Florida but in the southeastern United States too. In fact, Miami is considered to be an alpha level World City and is home to many large company headquarters. There are also many headquarters to Latin American operations and other international corporations such as Sony, and Telemundo.

You'll also find the headquarters of Sony, Walmart, Visa, Royal Caribbean, and Microsoft here. This is just the beginning of the long list of companies that are located in this city. Therefore, if you're looking for a place to switch careers or find employment with a stable company, your selection is greater here compared to other places in the southeastern United States.

7. You'll Enjoy Natural Sights

Though Miami is a vastly urban area, once you get outside the city, you can find plenty of natural sights. One example is the Everglades to Miami's West, which has many wonderful plants and animals native to Florida.

This protected habitat is a big draw for tourists from around the country. The beautiful Biscayne Bay is to the east, and Lake Okeechobee is south. And, of course, there are plenty of beautiful beaches to enjoy for all the residents when they reach Miami's coast.
