Best Places to Live Near Wesleyan University

Back To Index

Wesleyan University is a prestigious institution of higher learning that was founded in 1831 in Middletown, Connecticut. What was originally a men’s school expanded to become a coed liberal arts university that offers degrees in a variety of relevant disciplines. Though Wesleyan University was originally identified as a Methodist institution and was named after the founder of Methodism, it eventually became a secular school.

Wesleyan University has many famous graduates that have become members of Congress, the presidential cabinet, CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, and many other prominent political figures. Overall, Wesleyan is a prestigious university that is desirable to attend for anyone who wants to mingle with the who’s who of the professional and political world. What type of residential policies are in place for undergraduates and graduate students? Where are the best places to live near Wesleyan University?

Undergraduate Housing: On-Campus

If you want to live off-campus but you’re an undergraduate student, you should know that the school's policy mandates that students live on campus for the entire four years of their undergraduate education. Thankfully, there is a variety of housing available to suit different housing preferences. The university believes that living on campus gives students more opportunities to grow and develop personally outside the classroom. Why? The higher-ups believe that living on-campus housing makes interactions with other students and staff more frequent, which helps forge strong relationships.

Although undergraduate students should live on campus for all four years, they have access to different types of housing as they continue their studies, which include:

  • Residence Halls
  • Community-Based Living
  • Program Housing
  • Apartments
  • Wood Frame Housing

Living arrangements become increasingly independent as the students progress through their undergraduate years. For example, first-year students may just have access to residence halls while third and fourth-years can access apartments.

Wesleyan does understand that not one size fits all when it comes to undergraduate living. Some students have extenuating circumstances that make it difficult to live on campus. These students can get exemptions from the residential requirement and can apply to live off-campus through the off-campus application process. Students who qualify for exemptions have unique life circumstances, such as being married, over the age of 25, or being a caretaker to an aging parent. To learn more about exemptions, contact the Office of Residential Life.

Graduate Housing: On-Campus

Wesleyan University gives graduate students the option to live on or off-campus. If you wish to live on campus as a graduate student, it’s important to contact the Office of Residential Life as soon as possible, because there is a limited amount of Graduate housing spaces. Graduate students have access to group houses, one and two-person units, and family units. Students who wish to secure their spot need to complete a Graduate Housing Application as soon as possible.

If you are a recently accepted graduate student or a Wesleyan graduate student that has not lived on campus and would like to inquire about graduate housing, you need to complete the Graduate Housing Application.
