About Danville, VA

Danville is a small town with a population of 42,590. The beautiful Dan River runs through the city.

Historically, English colonist William Byrd explored the area in 1728. After the American Revolutionary War, the first settlement was founded in 1792 to exploit the opportunities for tobacco farming. The village was named Danville in 1793. The city charter would not happen until 1833. The Danville Railway was completed in 1856.

Danville was heavily involved in the American Civil War. At the beginning of the war, there were 5,000 inhabitants, and the town became a major railway hub for the Confederate Army. It was temporarily the Capitol of the Confederacy for about one year towards the end of the war when the South lost. Many died in the war.

Racial strife continued after the war. Significant problems occurred during the 1960s with the violence related to the Civil Rights Movement.

In contemporary times, there is a focus on inclusion, community building, and revitalizing the River District. A new casino is being built that is planned to open in 2024.
