About Plainview, TX

Hale County’s government is in Plainview. Lubbock is the nearest big city, about a 40-minute drive via I-27. This area where the town was built is on a vast, wide-open space called the Llano Estacado. The population is 20,187, according to the 2020 U.S. Census.

Plainview was founded in 1887. It was named appropriately from a description of the vista. The town charter came in 1888. By the early 1900s, the area was booming. The railroad reached the town in 1906. Plainview was officially incorporated in 1907.

In contemporary times, the city is known for its food and meat processing plants. The largest employer in the town used to be the Cargill beef processing factory, which closed in 2013. A bad two-year drought killed all the cattle from 2010 to 2012. The Cargill plant closure displaced 2,500 workers, which was about 15% of the residents.

Jimmy Ray Dean is a famous person from Plainview. He was a country singer and an actor on television. He created a brand, Jimmy Dean Sausage, which he promoted with advertisements on television. He died in 2010, but the products remain popular.
