About Conway, SC
Conway is the county seat of Horry County. The 2020 census counted 24,849 people living in this town. It is part of the Myrtle Beach Metropolitan Area. It is an inland community and a short 15-mile drive from the beach.
The area's history shows a conversion of the residents from loyalists to revolutionists. They were loyalists to the British monarchy under the reign of King George II from the 1730s to the 1750s. At that time, the town was called Kings Town, shortened to “Kingston.”
When King George III inherited the throne, they changed their support to the revolutionists during the American Revolutionary War because they were sympathetic to the fight by the rebels in Charleston against taxation without representation.
In 1801, Horry County was established with the construction of a courthouse in this town. Then, Kingston had its name changed to “Conwayborough” to honor General Robert Conway, a local hero. In 1883, the name was officially shortened to Conway.
In contemporary times, this town is a lovely historic river town sitting on the western banks of the Waccamaw River. It is popular with tourists who come to visit the Myrtle Beach area.
