Southaven is in Desoto County, Mississippi. The 2020 census counted 54,648 people living in this suburban town. Even though the city is in Mississippi, it is a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis straddles the Tennessee/Mississippi border. The city got its name from being south of the Whitehaven suburb of Memphis.
The town started when a homebuilder named Kemmons Willson, the founder of the Holiday Inn hotel chain, wanted to create a new real estate development of small starter homes. He chose some land for development that was then in the unincorporated part of Desoto County, south of Whitehaven and not within the city limits of Memphis.
In the 1970s, Whitehaven was annexed by Memphis. Then, Southaven started growing like crazy. It was one of the fastest-growing cities in the southwest during the 1980s and 1990s. The land area for Southaven doubled within 20 years, and the population tripled as it began part of Memphis.
In contemporary times, the city is best known for its proximity to Memphis International Airport, just two miles north.
