About Clearwater, MN
Clearwater is a small town that is partially in Stearns County and partially in Wright County. The part in Wright County is a suburb of the Minneapolis–St. Paul–WI Metro area. The Mississippi River is the biggest feature. The town is on I-94 just west of Becker and about 54 miles northwest of downtown Minneapolis. The population is 8,524 (2020 U.S. Census).
Historically, the area was platted in 1856, and a post office was established that year. The area was settled after a treaty in 1851 was made with the Native American Sioux people. The native people called the area “Sulan.” The settlers called it “The Big Woods.”
Three historical buildings are still standing in the National Register of Historic Places. They are the First Congregational Church of Clearwater (built-in 1861), the William W. Webster House (built in 1863), and the Clearwater Masonic and Grand Army of the Republic Hall (built in 1888).
This town is best known for its beautiful natural setting, outdoor adventures, and fishing.
