About Salyersville, Kentucky.

Salyersville is a tiny little city in the deep hills of Eastern Kentucky. It is the seat of Magoffin County, a small area near the headwaters of the Licking River. Approximately 1700 people live within the city's limits, surrounded by a county with about 12,000 more citizens spread out through it. Salyersville is the main mercantile center for this largely rural and forested area, and it contains most of the area's government and commercial facilities. This town is noted for its turbulent history during the Civil War and the coal mining era. Still, the last major coal-related industry closed its doors in 2015, leaving the area as a nature lover's paradise. Salyersville lies at the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway's eastern terminus, a major highway connecting the city to Winchester and I-64 to the west. The town is equidistant from the large cities of Lexington, Kentucky, and Charleston, West Virginia, both within easy driving distance. Moderately sized cities such as Ashland and Morehead are also nearby, and Salyersville is known as the gateway to many of the small towns of the southeastern hills of Kentucky.

What to do in Salyersville, KY.

Salyersville boasts several restaurants and hotels, most located at the conjunction of the Mountain Parkway and the main road through town, Parkway Drive/US 460. The Pioneer Museum, located downtown, maintains a complex of fifteen log cabins and a wide variety of interpretative exhibits that will help people to understand what life was like around here at the time of European settlement. Many entertaining city social events are on the yearly calendar, including Founder's Day, Independence Day, and the locally famous Street Dance. Several monuments are dedicated to the fascinating Civil War-era history of Salyersville and its colorful founder, "Uncle Billie" Adams. Although they have yet to be honored with a yearly festival or a museum dedicated to them, the famous Flynt Brothers, founders of Hustler Magazine and political provocateurs par excellence, also hail from Salyersville.

Working in Salyersville, KY.

Besides retail, maintenance, legal, and the other small industries that make a town function, several people work at Logan Machinery and other small industries. However, fully 60% of the working population of Salyersville leaves the city to travel to their place of employment. Although the area has traditionally been home to enormous coal mining operations and their ancillary industries, all coal mining operations have left the area entirely in recent years. This has been an enormous boon to hunters, anglers, and nature lovers, and ecotourism is sharply rising across Magoffin County. A third of the jobs in Salyersville proper are in education, and the medical fields, but Magoffin County offers a much wider diversity of employment opportunities.

Salyersville, KY. Neighborhoods

Salyersville is generally divided into about four neighborhoods. However, due to the size of the small town, the boundaries are fluid and quite permeable. These neighborhoods include the City Center, Bradley/Iveyton to the south, Stella/Dale to the west, and Swampton/Gapville to the southeast. All of these areas are largely rural. Bradley/Iveyton is possibly the most expensive neighborhood, and Stella/Dale has experienced the most economic growth in recent years, but all the differences between these areas are largely notional. Both crime statistics and per capita income are substantially below the national average for all these neighborhoods.

Salyersville, KY. School District

Salyersville is home to the Magoffin County Institute, a high school with over a century of history. They also maintain the Herald Whitaker Middle School and three elementary schools scattered throughout the town; North Magoffin Elementary, Salyersville Elementary, and South Magoffin Elementary. No secondary education institutions or private schools have public listings, but this is hardly a surprise in a town of this size. People from the area who wish to pursue higher learning travel to one of the large institutions in Morehead or other surrounding areas.

Salyersville, KY. Housing

Salyersville is not a larger or more glamorous city by any estimation. It is a beautiful little mountain town, perfect for those who value nature, peace, privacy, and a quiet way of life. The cost of living is meager, even by Kentucky standards, and property prices are quite affordable in the town and surrounding county. One can expect to purchase a decent-sized home for around $60,000, even lower outside the city limits. A renter looking for a single-bedroom apartment in the City Center or any decent place around town can expect to pay about $450 monthly rent. If someone were to move to this area with a telecommuter job or some other form of outside funding, they would find this area more livable than practically anywhere else in America.

Many people who work in tech, communication, and the arts have already discovered this, and eastern Kentucky is quickly filling up with intelligent, hard-working people with 21st-century jobs and the desire to live closer to the land. This is especially common with the leaders of families, as Kentucky's liberal home-schooling laws are ideal for many modern parents. This is very much a car-based city. It is normal for people to leave the area for work, school, play, or shopping, then return for the delightful pace of life and local character. No matter how the residents spend their day, they find that Salyersville is a healthy, nurturing place with immense beauty, security, and traditional Southern friendliness to spare.
