He was called upon on April 5, 1968, to diffuse the violence associated with the civil rights movement, which he was able to do. Martin Luther King Jr had been assassinated the day before. When violence nearly broke out during one of his performances, Brown calmed the police at the show and asked those who rushed the stage to stand down. An arena in Augusta is named in his honor.
