About Augusta, GA

Augusta is a city/county combination on the border of Georgia and South Carolina. The two states are separated by the natural barrier formed by the Savannah River as it runs through the area that includes Augusta. North Augusta is a separate city on the side of South Carolina. Augusta City grew so big that it overtook Augusta County, so now the city and country are combined. The U.S. Census conducted in 2020 says the population is 202,081.

The city started in 1735 with its founding by James Oglethorpe. Oglethorpe was working on behalf of British interests and King George. He wanted to set up a town to create a massive cotton plantation that could be farmed by enslaved labor. Oglethorpe also founded Savannah two years before Augusta for the same reason. Both cities made extensive use of the resources of the Savannah River for water and transportation.
