About Hallandale Beach, FL

Europeans did not settle in this community until the end of the 19th century. Before that, it was used as a hunting ground by the Seminole Native Americans. Only about ten European families settled in this area in 1900. It took until 1927 for the city to be incorporated.

The city has a population of 41,217 now. Many are seasonal residents. About 40% of the residents have Hispanic heritage. Some came from Puerto Rico, and others from Cuba. About 43% of the residents are Caucasian, with a nice mixture of other races making up the remaining 17%.

The legendary Italian Mafia member Meyer Lansky made this beach town his home. He was the Jewish gangster responsible for all the finances of the National Crime Syndicate under the direction of mob boss Charles "Lucky" Luciano.

Lansky lived from 1902 to 1983 and died of lung cancer at 80. He left behind an estimated $300 million that the FBI said was stashed, but the money was never recovered. Treasure hunters still dream about finding Lansky's money buried somewhere.
