1. Everyone's Welcome in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

The Myrtle Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau says that the tourism industry is the largest business sector in Myrtle Beach. Estimates are that almost 20 million visitors come to this area each year.

2. Myrtle Beach is a Golfer's Paradise

There are 88 golf courses to enjoy in the area. Close to three million rounds of golf are played annually. Retirees, who live in the area, can play a different course each week. It takes almost two years to play them all. Two of the best courses in Myrtle Beach are found at the River Oaks Golf Plantation and the Pine Lakes Country Club.

The Pine Lakes Country Club is also a popular place for weddings. If full-size golf is not your sport, take the family to one of the 34 miniature golf courses for fun instead.

3. Delicious Tastes for Every Culinary Palate

In Myrtle Beach, there are over 1,800 restaurants offering full-service dining. Many have authentic international-style dishes that are as good or better than those found in the countries that the recipes come from. If you plan to move to this area, you may want to open up a new bistro or restaurant. There is always room for one more if the food is super tasty.

4. Jobs Galore

Jobs that support the tourist industry, directly and indirectly, total about 83,000. The local financial impact of tourism is $7 billion each year. About 80% of the tourism jobs (around 65,000 of them) are full-time and year-round. There are plenty of jobs in the hospitality sector, with over 400 hotels.

5. Myrtle Beach is a Small Town with a Big City Feel

Myrtle Beach is one of the small towns that line the South Carolina coast. The population is only around 30,000. There is a nice camaraderie among the locals who are used to having about half a million new people visit their small town each week. The style of southern hospitality offered by the locals is very pleasant.

6. Fun Entertainment is Just Around the Corner

Actors, singers, dancers, and musicians perform at the seven live entertainment theaters with about 7,500 seats in total. There are live performances year round at the Carolina Opry. Families enjoy popular dinner shows at the Medieval Times and the Pirates Voyage Fun, Feast, and Adventure.

Visitors may enjoy stand-up comedians, sleight-of-hand magicians, hypnotists, live bands, pianists, and jazz/lounge singers and more who perform in the local bars and clubs. These are great jobs for creative types.

7. Shop Until You Drop

Bargain-hunters will go crazy hunting for good deals. They can enjoy shopping at over 300 outlet stores, where almost every name brand imaginable is sold at a discount. A must-see shopping place is the Coastal Grand Mall.

8. Amuse Your Friends and Family

The Family Kingdom Amusement Park is a popular place for families, located near the beach. It has over 38 thrill-rides and a water park. Everyone should take a ride on the SkyWheel at least once for a spectacular view of the area. It is located on the boardwalk running down North Ocean Blvd. Another place to visit is the WonderWorks, where everything, including the building, is upside down. Then go to the nearby Ripley's Aquarium to enjoy viewing ocean life. Both are located on Celebrity Circle near Broadway at the Beach.

9. Relax and Rejuvenate

Visitors and locals (who may get a discount if they ask for it) enjoy taking some time to enjoy a spa experience and have a nice massage. There are about 50 spas and wellness centers in the area. One that gets great reviews the Mystic Garden Day Spa.

10. Rental Home Business

The median home price in this area is $173,600, which is about $30,000 higher than homes in other parts of South Carolina. The median rent for this area is only $820 per month, which is only $13 higher than other parts of South Carolina. About half of the homes in Myrtle Beach are rented and the other half are owned.

Quite a good business exists in renting out private rooms in homes using online services like AirBNB to advertise them. It a good business to rent private rooms for up to $50 per night, especially during the high season in summertime or provide bed and breakfast services for tourists. Get a home with an extra bedroom and private bath to rent out and this helps the home pay for itself.

11. Living Nearby Saves Money

If you go about eight miles west from Myrtle Beach to Socastee, the price of a home is much cheaper. You have to give up beach living; however, you can live on the edge of the beautiful Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge that is superb for hiking and camping.

The median home price in Socastee is $150,200 (a $20,000+ savings). Many live in Socastee and commute to Myrtle Beach for work. Besides saving money, being away from the beach is an advantage during hurricane season.

12. What Myrtle Beach is Famous For

President George Washington stayed at a tavern operated by William Gause when he visited the area in 1791. The city officially became a beach town in 1900. It was named Myrtle Beach after a local plant that grows wild in the area. It became a popular destination location after the railroad extended the tracks to Myrtle Beach from Conway, South Carolina.

The country-rock band named Alabama, which had seven platinum records, got its start by performing at a club in Myrtle Beach. The beach is family-friendly and wearing a thong bathing suit by anyone is illegal, so everyone is encouraged to keep their beach activities G-rated.
